THE ASSOCIATION OF ONTARIO LOCKSMITHS

Fire Drills and Escape Planning

Fire drills at home are the best type of preparation a family can do.  This way everyone in your home knows what actions to take and what exits to use in the
event of a fire.  When organizing your drills, be sure to use the following steps.

1.    Draw a floor plan of your home with at least two exits from each room
2.    Go over all the information necessary for reporting a fire over the phone.
Be sure children know their street name and number of the house.
3.    Establish a pre-set meeting area outside the house.  This will prevent
someone from re-entering a burning house in search of a person who
has already safely left the burning home.  Be sure your meeting spot will
not interfere with the arrival of the firefighters.

4.    Practice drills over and over again until everything goes as planned.
Continue to practice drills on a regular basis, at least once every three
months.  When you move to a new home, be sure to make a new escape
       plan.

Safety Reminders:

1.    When you detect fire or smoke, shout to warn the other people in the home.
Children and older people will need help.  Don't wait to get dressed.  Shoes
and one blanket per person will suffice- even in cold weather.

2.    Make sure windows can be quickly opened and ladders are available when
       required.

3.    If you live in an apartment building, NEVER, use an elevator in a fire or a fire
drill.  In a real fire, the elevator could stop between floors or take you right to
       the floor of a fire.

4.    Make sure all escape routes (hallways, stairways) are clear of anything which
could make it hard to escape from your home.

Reporting Fires

When phoning to report a fire, be sure to speak clearly and supply the fire
department with the address of the location of the fire.  Due you know the
telephone number of the fire department.  The last thing you want to be doing
is calling directory assistance for the local number.  If you don't know the number
call 911.  Be sure if you have a Voip phone that you are aware that some services
do not display the proper emergency routing service and you could be connected
to the wrong department or even wrong city.

Also provide the fire department with a brief description of the nature of the fire.
"A single family house with flames coming out of the roof"

Make sure you have 1 smoke detector installed on every level of your home.  If you sleep with your bedroom doors closed than you need to also install 1 detector in each bedroom so you receive early warning if the fire starts from your room.

Call us today to arrange to add monitored smoke detectors to your security system
