THE ASSOCIATION OF ONTARIO LOCKSMITHS

Smoke Alarms Save lives:  Install alarms on each level of your home.  Don't forget about the basement.  Test your smoke alarms once a month and install new batteries once a year or when the alarm "chirps" to show you a low battery power.

Lost your Keys?:  Immediately contact our 24 hour locksmith service and request a complete re-key of all exterior doors to your home.  Remember your keys can be found by a intruder that potentially will have the key to your front door.  Police and Guard response can effectively be rendered useless in a situation that allows entry to your home without forced entry.   Protect your self today!!  If you have just moved in to your home please remember to Re-key.  Our locksmith division can usually accommodate you the same day, so arrange our services literally when you get the keys from your Lawyer.

Practice a way out:  Draw a floor plan of your home showing at least two ways out of every room and plan and practice how your family would escape a fire.  Make an outdoor meeting place in front of your home where everyone will meet once they get out.  Call the fire department from a neighbor's phone, portable phone or phone booth, after you are out of the house.  Do not go back into your home until the firefighters say it is okay to do so.  Never ever go back into a burning building.

Stop, Drop and Roll:  If you clothing catches on fire, stop where you are, drop to the ground, cover your face with your hands and roll over and over until all the flames have gone out.  Use cold running water on any burned area and go to a hospital for medical attention.

Home hazards:    Store matches and lighters in a locked cabinet out of children's reach.  Keep portable heaters three feet away from anything that can catch on fire.  Don't overload electrical outlets,  Never empty ashtrays into normal garbage as this can cause a fire.

Keep household cleaning products and medicines locked up and out of children's reach.  Store flammable liquids, such as gasoline, kerosene, paint thinner, in small quantities outside the home in their original containers or in approved safety containers.  Have your home tested for lead paint.  Have heating equipment inspected annually and consider installing carbon monoxide alarms.

Security starts at the Front door:   Since most break-ins occur through your door, start with a high security Mul-T-Lock or Medeco dead bolt lock on all exterior doors.  But understand that’s not enough. The physical frame, door and lock must work together to resist physical attack. For example, a strong lock is not effective, if the frame is not reinforced around the striking plate. Without reinforcing, the lock it can be pried open by moving or spreading the frame, or the door can be simply kicked in.  Remember a burglar isn’t worried about the damage and will be much more physical than you will be when you are testing your doors.  Let our locksmith professional assess your security needs today!!!

Fall Prevention:    Never allow kids to play unsupervised in a uppers storey room window.  Install window guards with quick release mechanisms that can be opened with ease in the event of a fire.

Educate children:    Children should be taught never to accept candy, medicine from anyone except a trusted adult and to tell a grown-up if they find medicine or any poisonous substance.

Children & Safety Belts:    Kids and infants under 18 Kilograms / 40 pounds are required by our law to ride buckled up in a approved child safety seat.   Kids between 18 and 28 kilograms  40 & 60 pounds usually between four through eight years old, should ride in a tested and approved booster seat.  If a shoulder strap crosses a child's face or throat, do not slip it behind the back or under his or her arm, use a approved booster seat.  Never let your kids sit in the front seat with a air bag equipped vehicle.
