Day Light Saving Time and Your Security

security in daylight savingsWhenever there is change in time it most certainly affects our daily lifestyle, but does it have any effect on home and business security measures.? Does that extra day light really make a difference?

One extra hour of daylight is certainly not going to deter thieves. They have all the time in the world to go about their nasty deeds. In fact, many of them will commit their break ins in broad daylight.

What you can do though is use the change in time as your trigger to do a review of your security system for both your home and business. Even if your system is new in the last year it still should be something that you review.

Perhaps you have only gone with the basic security measures. As time has passed you have added a lot more assets to your home or business. Determine now if you think you have enough protection in place in relation to these. For example, perhaps your security measures only consisted of having updated locks on your doors and windows. Is it now time to upgrade to a monitoring system? It is something that you need to give some thought to.

Maybe the windows in your home are in need of replacing. You may be looking at this from an efficiency point of view, but you also need to consider their level of security as well. This is a favorite entry points of thieves.

At the same time using the day light saving time as a reminder to check the condition of your alarms for fire and smoke is a good idea. Once you are sure these are in proper working order, also take the time to do a proper inspection of your home. When you are tuning the clock back, it is in the fall. During the summer months it is possible that you have stored or piled up things too close to your heating sources. For example, make sure you don’t have old paint cans that you used for your summer painting project too close to any sources that could cause them to ignite. Now is the time to either dispose of them or store them in a safe place.

Daylight saving time changes can be a great source for enhancing your security by triggering your awareness. Be sure to check out what the security professionals at Pre-lock have to offer to keep your family, home and business safe and secure.
