What Do You Know About Elevator Security?

elevator securityMost people who live in high rise apartments soon get used to using the elevators and don’t give it a second thought. Then there are those that are really nervous about using these devices. Some are just claustrophobic while others fear they will break down and they will be trapped. To put yourself at ease, or event to become aware that your elevator is lacking property security protection there are a few things that you can observe.

First you will be glad to know that there are tons of regulations that have to be adhered to when it comes to elevators. This includes all of the parts that go into making them, plus their installation, servicing and regulations that must be followed for having them in different locations.

One of the worst fears is becoming trapped in an elevator, and let’s face it on occasion this does happen. There should be a emergency phone in the elevator that you can use to call for help, or at least a help button. What is just as important is that there is going to be someone available to respond. This doesn’t mean that there actually has to be someone on the premises for this. Companies like Pre-lock security offers elevator monitoring services for this type of situation. It provides a 24 hour monitoring, that if activated the monitoring center will immediately notify the property manager, fire department, and dispatch an elevator repairman. This is an excellent service for any business that makes use of an elevator for their clients, as well as for those who make use of the elevator.

One very common complaint for some apartment dwellers is the frequency in which their elevators break down. This not only creates an inconvenience but creates the disturbing thought that this could happen while they are on the elevator.

Your first course of action is to talk to your property manager about the issue. If you have an apartment or condo association you may want to bring the concerns to their attention, and have them collectively approach the property manager.

If you simply don’t get any satisfaction from these actions you can check out the TTSA (Technical Standards and Safety Authority) and see what they suggest.

If you have the unfortunate experience of being trapped in an elevator, don’t panic. Stay calm and locate the alarm button or phone button, or telephone handset that is present. If there is voice communication explain your circumstance. Then continue to remain calm and wait for help to arrive. Only emergency personnel or certified elevator mechanics are authorized to handle an entrapment situation. Do not attempt to self rescue yourself by forcing the doors open. If you are feeling boxed in try some deep breathing exercises and think pleasant thoughts.
