Outdoor Decorating for the Holidays and Home Security

Security and Holiday decoratingWell the year has just flown by and here we are entering another Holiday season. The snow may not have arrived yet and a lot of people are taking this lull before the storm to get their home holiday outdoor decorating done. While this is a mixture of work and fun it is also time to think of how this activity relates to your home security.

First think about the type of decorating you are going to be doing. Chances are you are going to be putting up some lights. Think carefully about your power source for these. Ideally if you have a outdoor plug then this can be utilized. There are two security concerns you want to think about here. First that your electrical use is going to be done in a safe manner so the threat of fire is not an issue. The second is compromising the security of your home. If you have to tap into the indoor electrical system to power your holiday lights do it in such a way that you are not allowing an opportunity for a would be thief to use this as a way to gain entry. For example, if your wires are going to a plug in your garage does it mean you have to leave the garage door slightly open to accommodate this? If so then this area of your home isn’t being protected by the garage locking system that would normally be used.

Next you want to remember with those larger decorations that you are not obscuring the overall view of your home. In other words you don’t want to provide cover for a thief while he is attempting to break in through one of your windows.

Naturally if you have a bit of a competitive nature you want to have the best decorated street in your neighborhood. While this is lots of fun it also attracts attention to your home, including the kind you don’t want. Mind you some people have so many lights on their home during this time its lit up like a neon sign and this isn’t something the break in artist wants to deal with. At the same time though these lights usually go off around midnight which is an ideal striking hour for the crook.

This should not deter you from decorating your home anyway that you want, it just means that you need to be extra diligent about making sure your home security systems are working up to par and are activated whenever needed.
