Security and Toronto Convenience Stores

convenience store securityConvenience store business is big business in Toronto and throughout Ontario, with collectively serving over 3 millions customers on a daily basis. Operating any type of business in a tight economy such as what we are facing now comes with many challenges. Included in this is making sure the proper security measures are in place to protect both the staff and the establishment from robbery.

Quite often the mark up for profit on these types of businesses is not all that great so they must make their money by volume of sales. Drawing in traffic to the business is usually not difficult provided it is located in a good location. Plus, it often means having to have long hours of operation.

In order to keep expenses down may convenience store owners will attempt to run their business with limited staff. This can make the store vulnerable for robbery and theft. Criminals only have to focus on one or two at the most employee’s while they go about their thievery. It is not unusual for these types of business to stay open till midnight or even all night, and be operated by only one staff member.

This dictates the need for top notch security. In the past convenience stores were ripe targets for robbers because of the large amount of cash that they would keep on site. That has changed over the years, and store owners make it well known that large amounts of cash are not on site, and that employee’s have no access to the safe. This has helped to deter some theft at least when it comes to robberies evolving around the cash.

In order to beef up sales these types of stores have expanded their inventory to include other types of products that may have more cash value than just the consumable type products commonly found at these locations. These can now make them more vulnerable to theft.

The ideal solution for convenience store owners to help to dramatically reduce themselves as being targets of crime, is to utilize the services of experienced security providers like those at Pre-lock who can develop a full security measures plan for the business. This can include the right security system and monitoring that will make the business less of a theft target. It doesn’t mean that it has to be an expensive endeavor but it does mean careful planning and the right layout, choice and implementation of security measures applicable to this type of business.
