Are You Sending Out an Invitation for Robbery?

burglar securityAsking if you are sending out an open invitation for robbery may seem a little absurd, but many home owners basically do so without even realizing it. As hard as it is for an honest person to think like a thief, you almost have to in order to thwart their attempt at burglarizing your home.

In the past we have talked about a lot of tips of what you can do to take extra measures from having your home broken into. We have talked about various security equipment and security services that you can utilize. It is worth talking about these yet again because sometimes repetition of important things like security can help you form good solid protection habits which are going to support your current security measures.

Many times a thief who is planning on a home break in will first scout the area. When you are busy outside chances are you are not paying much attention as to who is out and about your neighborhood. If you happen to see a vehicle driving by in your area that seems to be going slower than usual then at least make a mental note of this. If you see that same car again then you will automatically pay more attention to it, and it will heighten your senses.

Some security habits are easy to form. Like making sure your doors and windows have good locks on them, that you set your security system when you are away. These are usually something most people do. Take a look at some other less common areas. Are you forgetting to lock the garage door even when you are home? Do you have a tendency to always lock the garage door but don’t bother locking the door within there that leads to the interior of your home? Have you given as much thought to your basement windows as you do the rest of them? Even though they may seem small to you, for some thieves they manage to get their way in through these.

More experienced burglars will carry their own tools with them, but many times they won’t bother because a lot of home owners leave common items laying about the home that will serve the purpose. An ideal location for such items is an unlocked garden shed. Here a thief can find an assortment of items that will assist them in breaking locks and windows. Putting a good lock on the garden shed is a simple but very effective additional security measure.
