Tips for Handling a Home Break In

handling a home break inIdeally you will never find yourself in a situation where you have to deal with a break in of your home. However, should this happen it is imperative that you do not panic. Hopefully you have a security system in place that has been activated and help is on the way. In any event if you can safely get to your phone make the 911 call. It is always a good idea to have your cell phone with you during the night time hours, within reach of your bed. That way if your land line wires were cut you still have access to a phone.

When you discover an unwanted person is in your home your instincts are going to kick in and these are usually the fight or flight response. You want to remain as quiet as possible and not draw attention to yourself. No doubt your mind is full of fear at the moment but try and determine where the sounds are coming from and how many intruders there may be.

There are no set rules that can be followed at a time such as this as no two circumstances are the same. Perhaps there are other family members in the home and you are fearing for their safety, or you are alone.

The ideal scenario would be to gather everyone in one room without drawing the attention of the intruder then barricading the entry to the room.  Nobody within the home should try and play hero by confronting the intruder. In most cases these unscrupulous individuals just want to get in and out as quickly as possible. If the alarm has been triggered they will want to act quickly and grab what they can from the floor that they entered on which in most cases will be the main floor.

Aside from having a good security system in place that has included the proper locks and protection for your windows and doors, you also should have a plan in place in case of an adverse event such as this.

If you happen to come face to face with an intruder then try to stay calm and listen to their demands and try to comply with them. Don’t initiate any violent action by fighting back but if this occurs then fight back with everything you have.

Fortunately most burglars just want the valuables they perceive as being in the house and are not there to create any personal injury. With a good security system in place in a lot of cases that is enough to deter your home from being a potential target.
