A Common Sense Approach to Your Home Security

common sense home securityIt is so easy to get caught up in providing security for your home with devices that offer little protection or become more like gadgets rather than useful items for keeping your family and home safe.

Almost everyone likes to use electronics for a variety of reasons around their home and this includes security electronics. We are in the age of automation and tend to look at this as making life easier. For many products buying them simply because they are fun to use, or add some convenience to your life is fine, but when it comes to your home security needs you may want to be a little more choosy as to what you are going to rely on for this.

First you want to determine just what your security needs are and at what level of security you want to go to. Some people are naturally nervous and take more comfort in having multiple forms of protection in place. Others are quite content with having basic home protection. How you decide on what you need relies on several factors.

How old is your home and when was it last updated in regards to good window locks and new door hardware? You also want to consider the framework of the doors as well determining how vulnerable they are. The solutions for these is not expensive and there is a lot that you can do to strengthen the entrance points of your home. You can have new locks installed and if the framework is weak you can use door safe, to beef up its strength and make gaining entry by simply kicking in your door no easy task for thieves.

Also, you may have heard that keeping your window areas free and clear from shrubs and trees which could help shield criminals while they go about breaking into your home, is a good thing. Yes, this is true but for older established homes, often the shrubbery has been in place several years and the home owner really doesn’t want to disturb this. A good alternative to this is to enhance the window security by using screen alarms or having the now very attractive window bars installed.

The best type of security measures that you can plan for is setting up different levels of barriers that each pose a real challenge to the burglar. Good exterior lighting, updated security for your doors, driveway alerts and a basic but quality security system installed are all good steps to take for a common sense approach to home security.
