Paying Attention to Fire Safety Week

fire prevention weekDuring the spring/summer months there is always a lot of events that are taking place and it is easy to get caught up in all the fun and excitement. This is also the time where some very important events are taking place that can actually be a life saver. A good example of this is the Toronto Fire Services Safety Awareness Week beginning June 9th.

While we all try to be fire conscious and take as many precautions as necessary there may be some additional steps that you can take that you really weren’t aware of.  While most people are aware of general fire safety guidelines, it is important to take a look at your specific residence and determine what is the best fire safety plan for your particular circumstance.

For this fire safety awareness week firefighters are going to focus on high rise living and what safety measures are most applicable for this type of living. If this is not something that is applicable to you, then check out what your best protection is for your dwelling. If you live in a basement apartment for example what type of fire safety precautions do you have in place, and what are your escape routes in the event of a fire? Have you checked the fire safety codes for you situation and are they being adhered to?

If you live in an apartment setting or have a semi-detached home and you perceive there is danger for a fire breaking out then it is important to bring this potential danger to the attention of those who are responsible for rectifying the situation. While we all like to mind our own business we should not do so to the extent where it could potentially place us in danger.

Don’t take anything for granted when it comes to your personal safety especially with fire. If you suspect that something could be a fire hazard, like a frayed electrical cord or overuse of a plug then take the steps to correct this issue now. It is well worth doing a walk about of your home both inside and out to ensure that you are fire safe.

Make sure you have the proper fire safety alarms installed in your home, that they are in good working order, and that every family member responds properly in the event they are triggered. Have a well planned fire escape making sure every family member is aware of it, and a meeting place outside of the home, in the event of a fire.
