Thinking of Your Security During Emergency Preparedness Week

Emergency Preparedness Week and SecurityThere is never a time when home and business security should be forgotten about, but sometimes we become complacent about this when we live and work in great neighborhoods where crime is very seldom. During emergency preparedness week it is a good time to consider all factors of your protection and what you should do in the event of various types of emergency.

This one week yearly event is a national venue. The purpose is to get families to put a plan of action aside to rely on in case of a major disaster. This plan should span many aspects and will allow them to plan for a 72 hour preparedness. If it happens to be a health related disaster like a pandemic then authorities say that it is best to have a plan for a 2 week period. What this means is having the knowledge concerning the emergency, then a supply of the necessities of life to sustain during a given period, and the tools needed to help you. Have a home and work evacuation plan. Check out the various events that take place during this week to help you learn how to become prepared. Make this a family event encouraging everyone’s involvement so that everyone in the family knows how to respond should an emergency occur.

You should adopt the same type of attitude with your home security that you rely on every day to keep you protected. The entire family should know what steps to take consistently to keep safe at home. Small habits like remembering to keep the doors locked, and not answering them to strangers are the ones that we try to instill in the family members. Other factors like remembering to set the alarm when leaving the home even if its only for a short period of time is something that should be instilled in everyone as well. Not giving out the codes to members who do live in the home is another thought to keep in mind.

Fire safety is something that should be constantly kept as a priority. Make sure that every family member responds accordingly even if it is a false alarm. Do not allow any family member to become laid back because they figure its just a false triggering. Have a good escape route and a common meeting place in a safe area away from the home in case of fire.

Being prepared for an emergency can be life saving, and so can forming good home security habits.
