Christmas Tree Safety For The Festive Season

Christmas tree safetyThere is no doubt that we use a lot more electrical power during the holiday season keeping those decorations shining brightly. Fortunately with the modern technology that we enjoy it makes decorating for the festive season a whole lot safer. There are still some potential fire hazards that can occur especially with your Christmas tree, and being aware of these will add to your safety and protection.

We talked about lighting safety tips in one of our recent posts. Now we would like to expand upon this by talking about some other potential safety issues that comes with the Christmas trees. Some people like to go with the artificial ones while others like the real thing.

If you are going with the artificial tree then you have reduced some of the potential fire risks. These trees last for years and some people have had theirs for a long time. It might be a good idea to check that it is fire retardant. The newer types have this feature. Also you want to be sure that you are using the proper indoor lights, and that the bulbs are not getting hot when they have been on for awhile. Also, check the cords to make sure they are in good condition, and don’t overload the electrical circuit.

Now for those that are going for the real trees there are some additional safety measures that you want to put into place. Make sure you choose a good spot to put your tree and that it is not close to any heat source. If you have a fireplace be absolutely sure the tree is a good distance away from it.

The more your real tree dries out the more of a hazard it can become. So be sure when you purchase your tree that it has been freshly cut, and that it is not already shedding its needles. Then once you get it home make sure that you put it in the type of stand that is capable of holding lots of water. Then this means that you must check it on a daily basis to ensure there is a good water supply.

Christmas trees really do add to the excitement of the festive season, and there is no reason why you cannot enjoy what they have to offer, provided you are on top of the potential hazards and are addressing these. Don’t forget to make sure that your fire alert systems are in good working order.
